CLEMATIS FLORIDA.

Tota glabra & inodora est. Caulis fruticosus, teres, ramosus, calamus crassus, petiolis sebescentibus in cirros mutatis ad duodecim pedes scandens. Folia opposita, petiolata, ternata vel biternata; foliolis ovatis, acutulis, integerrimis vel uno alterove dente incisis, a dimidia ad fescunciam longis. Pedunuli uniflori, axillares, solitarii, alterni, rarius oppositi, graciles, foliis plerumque longiores, infra medium duobus foliis simplicibus minoribus ornati. Flores speciosi, albi cum fuffufo hic illic virore, apud nos semper pleni, hinc staminibus pistillisque veris deflituti & steriles. 
Crescit in Japonia. Apud nos in caldariis floret a Majo ad finem Julii. Tabula sistit ramum florentum, & feorsim florem ex alia individua planta maxime plenum.

It is completely smooth and odourless. A bushy stem, sharp, branched, a thick cane, with sessile petioles changed into cirrus, climbing up to twelve feet. Leaves opposite, petiolate, ternate or biternate; leaflets ovate, sharp, entire or cut with one or the other tooth, from half to the stem long. Peduncles uniflorous, axillary, solitary, alternate, rarely opposite, slender, usually longer than the leaves, decorated below the middle with two smaller simple leaves. Beautiful flowers, white with a fluffy green here and there, always full with us, here and there the stamens and pistils of the spring are exhausted and sterile.
It grows in Japan. With us it blooms in pots from May to the end of July. The plate represents a branch in flower, and the most full flower from another individual plant.

Stems from the same root are numerous, bushy, branched, erect, nine feet, a thumb thick, armed with scattered curved spines. Leaves alternate, pinnate with odd. The ribs are sharp, notched with a fulcrum, hairy, and prickly on the back, broken at each worn yoke two treave inches long. Three or two leaflets on each side, very shortly petiolate, subovate, acute, serrate, villous on both sides, rugose and pale green beneath, the larger ones sessile. Stipules attached to the petioles on both sides, oblong, cuspidate, minutely serrate, subvillous on both sides, uncial. The axillary and terminal peduncles are subterranean, thick, hispid and not spiky, around the middle often adorned with sessile ovate-acuminate subserrated bracts. The flowers are very fragrant, a third in diameter. Calyx leaves ovate, defining a long apex hidden above, reflexed, hirsute; ciliated with small hairs, uncial. Petals very numerous, red. Anther yellow. Bud turbinate, hispid, glabrous on the upper edge. It refuses to bear fruit.
Does it grow in Europe? June blooms under the god. A blossoming branch is displayed on the plate.

Crescit in Oriente ? Floret sub dio ab æsiate ad hiemis adventum usgue. Sifiuntur ramulus florens & fructus.

A fruitful stem, erect, very branched, glabrous, armed with scattered strong curved or straight prickles, eight feet high. The branches forming the panicle are glabrous and unarmed. leaflets ovate, pointed, ferruginous with calloused brown denticles at the tip, lined with minute crenulate glands on the margin visible through a microscope, villous beneath the nerves and leading veins, otherwise entirely glabrous. The hairs are prickly and glandular. Stipules with capitate ciliated hairs. Panicles of fragrant flowers are very large, corymbose, erect, peduncles, ovate buds & villous calyxes. Calyx leaflets cuspidate, often subpinnatified by one or the other lobe. The corolla is white, full, six times in diameter, the outermost petals much larger. Fruit ovate, small, shiny, glabrous, red.
Does it grow in the East? It blooms under the sun from summer to the coming of winter. A flowering branch and fruits are shown.

Crescit in alpibus pyrenaiesis, helveticis & silesiacis. Floret sub dio Majo. In tabula repræsentatur ramulus florens cum tribus seoram fructibus maturis.

A bushy stem four feet tall, very branchy, unarmed, sharp, glabrous, erect. Branches glabrous, unarmed. The leaves are alternate, petiolate, pinnate, usually trilobed with the odd one. Hispid petioles. Leaf petioles supported by their own very short and hispid hairs, from oblong ovate, pointedly serrate, glabrous above, below the lens, by the way hispid, at the edges with short hairs headed and sparsely ciliated, often serrated with the teeth themselves. Petiolar stipules, oblong, sharply serrate, acuminate. Peduncles uniflorous, terminal, hispid, small, brownish in fruit. Calyx leaves five, lanceolate, concave, ending in a long cusp, very entire, very open, the petals are slightly longer, ciliated with cap hairs, otherwise glabrous. Petals five, subrounded, red, pale to the nail. Branch ovate, hairy. Fruit oblong, also ovate, glabrous, reddish, pendulous.
It grows in the Pyrenees, Swiss and Silesian Alps. It flourishes in May. In the plate is represented a flowering branch with three ripe fruits.

Petioli ad lentem villosi, uno alterove aculeo instructi. Foliola ovata, acuminata, serrata cum dentibus apice cartilagineis & fuscescentibus, basi uno alterove villo capitato ciliata, utrinque glabra, nervo dorsali medio unum alterumve aculeum parvum gerente, extimum multo majus. Stipulæ petiolis adnatæ, acuminatæ, argute serratæ, pilisque capitatis ciliatæ. Ramuli elongatur in pedunculos terminales, solitarios, unifloros, teretes, hirtulos & duas tresve uncias longos. Calycis foliola lanceolato-acuminata, utrique & ad oras villosa, plerumque integerrima. Corolla parum odorata, plena, profunde rubra, in varieate quadam carnea, petales brevi post expansionem latera sua retrorsum volventibus. Germen ovatum, glabrum. Styli & filamenta colore corollæ habent. Antheræ flavent.
Crescit in China. Sub dio agit æstatem, hiemen vel totum quoque annum in caldario, sie semper virens & a primo vere ad Januarium florens. Tabula fistit ramum florentem & seorsimex varietate carnea.

A fruiting stem, two or three feet high, branched, spreading, sharp, glabrous, with curved spines, scattered and sparsely armed. The leaves are alternate, the lower ones pinnate with an odd number of two ridges, the upper ones ternate. Petioles hairy towards the lens, furnished with one or the other prickle. Leaflets ovate, acuminate, serrate with cartilaginous and brownish teeth at the tip, ciliated at the base with one or two villous heads, glabrous on both sides, bearing one or two small prickles in the middle of the dorsal nerve, the outer one much larger. The stipules of the petiole are adnate, acuminate, sharply serrated, and the hairs are ciliate. The branches are elongated into terminal peduncles, solitary, single-flowered, smooth, tufted, and two or three inches long. Calyx leaves lanceolate-acuminate, villous on both sides and at the edges, usually very intact. The corolla is slightly scented, full, deep red, in a kind of fleshy variety, the petals rolling backwards shortly after their expansion. Stem ovate, glabrous. The styles and filaments have the corolla color. The anthers are yellow.
It grows in China. It spends summer, winter, or even the whole year in the hothouse, being always green and blooming from the first spring to January. The plate is filled with a flowering branch and a different flesh-coloured variety.
