Anyone who has spent time in Mel's company knows what a gentleman and endlessly generous person he was. You weren't a stranger around Mel for long. I can easily say that Mel's interactions with me have greatly influenced my path among the roses. I am certain that my life and my work would not be what it is without his efforts and kindness, for which I will be eternally grateful.
As many others have said more eloquently than I possibly can, Mel was generous and caring and kind to everyone he befriended and his youthful enthusiasm and eagerness to share what he knew was contagious. I will always picture Mel in his red Miata, traveling up and down the West coast, the car loaded with potted roses and a cooler full of cuttings; a Johnny Appleseed of roses!

Although I never had the oppourtunity to meet Mel Hulse. He influenced my view of roses as no other could. His generous nature to people & roses will not soon be forgotten.

I'm so sorry to hear that Mel has died. He gave me many hours of please in the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, especially in organizing virtual rose society prunings. A wonderful volunteer and promoter of that garden, he was also a fun individual.

Don and I met Mel only two years ago, when he introduced us to the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden and helped us locate specimens to photograph for our book Pink Ladies & Crimson Gents: Portraits & Legends of 50 Roses. Spending a few days with him, it was easy to see that he had a heart as big as the 'Constance Spry' blossoms he led us to and a constitution as tough as 'Duchesse de Grammont.' His knowledge and helpfulness didn't just inform our book, it enriched our lives.
