Could someone tell me what is the best planting mix for roses in the Birmingham area? I am planting some on a hill, but in an area with a lot of clay. Thanks

Here is what I use in Birmingham: First throw out the hard clay soil you dug out of the hole, then
refill with a mixture of regular top soil, peat moss, soil conditioner, and some sand. Some people
say it is ok to mix in some of the clay soil too, but I prefer not to and my roses (all 135) seem quite happy with the above mentioned fomulation.

One of the problems with digging a hole in clay soil is that you've created a bowl for water to sit in the event of heavy rains. Believe me it is sad to loose a newly burgeoning plant to spring rains.
