Rose (member) Garden

Part rose garden, part nose garden, this little spot nestled by a seasonal stream bed houses an eclectic collection of roses and fragrant flowering plants. Over 200 plants representing almost as many unique cultivars grace the garden. Lavender and and Jupiter's beard share one bed with Desiree Parmentier, Felicite Parmentier, Calwell Pink, and Henry Nevard, with Paul Noel looming in the background. Salvia Mainacht anchors another bed that hosts Day Breaker, Hermosa, Roxy, Grande Dame, and Young Lycidas. Purple monarda shares a bed with pink, white, and soft orange roses. Small beds of Europeana contrast with Artemesia Powys Castle. Madame Alfred Carrier and Ilse Krohn Superior begin to look comfortably trained on recently installed arches. Soft blue Clarence iris open the season. Oriental lilies provide color and fragrance during the July gap.
In addition to its occasional glorious color and fragrance, the garden offers challenges. Roses prove to be culinary favorites of marauding herds of deer and javelina, great clouds of aphids, burrowing desert rats, and munching squirrels. Weather hazards challenge frequently; there are occasional floods, long dry spells, and wide daily temperature swings in late fall and all through spring, with perhaps eighty or more round trips between freezing weather and 60F temperatures.
By definition, exceptional beauty one might find in one's garden is not to be found there constantly. We do, however, strive to create ever more opportunities for the sublime by planting better roses and other decorative plants, by rearranging them, by improving our cultivation skills, and by trying to learn from others. Occasionally we will achieve something worthy of sharing with friends.
