The Hillier Arboretum was established by nurseryman Harold Hillier (January 2, 1905 - January 8, 1985) in 1953 in 1953. It is administered as a charitable trust since 1977. The Gardens comprise 72 hectares with 42000 trees and shrubs, in approx. 12000 taxa.
