Mine is own-root, and my zone 5a kills roses to the crown every year, so each year the plant starts out as a tiny shoot, that's why the plant is so small. California folks who have Barcelona GRAFTED on Dr.Huey have lots of petals & bigger blooms & upright stems, but when these folks MAKE THEIR OWN-rootings, the rootings are tiny like mine. As to the fragrance, mine changes depending on the pH level. If I get horse manure at pH 8, it's clove-like & spicy as the article that you asked me to read refer to "true Barcelona". But if my tiny own-root gets tons of acidic rain, the scent changes to Damask/old rose & less spicy. There's a HUGE difference between own-root versus grafted rose. Like Jude the Obscure (grafted on Dr.Huey) have zillion petals (more than Golden Celebration). Saw that at rose park Jude was 7 feet tall, versus my Jude (own-root) is only 6 inch. tall, with much less petals and blooms at 1/2 size. There's a debate in Rose forum and Barcelona vs. Francis D. and folks who grow BOTH as own-root and grafted say they are the same, but the grafted has bigger blooms & more petals.
