Single Peonies (albiflora)
Balliol* (29L)
Large, amaranth purple, early. Carpels inconspicuously hairy, with bright red tips; disk conspicuous, pink. Plant large and compact, with flowers showing well above the foliage. Lord Kitchener is identical.

A star (*) following the name of a variety indicates that it was one of those showing to best advantage in the trial garden. 
The numbers in italics following the names refer to the donors [29=Netherlands Society of Peony Growers and Dealers, the 'L' might refer to L. van Leeuwen & Son]

NB: This description is pronably of 'Lord Kitchener', rather than 'Balliol', with which it was confused in commerce.
