‘Blaze’ = Grimpant à grande fleur. Très apprécié aux Etats-Unis… kyrielles de fleurs écarlates, épanouies en grands bouquets drus sur de robustes rameaux… en coupe, odorantes et bien doubles... Vigoureux et accomodant... robustes tiges flexibles, garnies d’un abondant feuillage vert franc, d’ordinaire très sain, encore qu’au Royaume-Uni, il soit parfois touché par l’oïdium. Sa remontance automnale est sujette à discussion; sur ce point, il se peut qu’il ait été confondu avec une forme sélectionnée ultérieure. Kallay, US 1932.

Large-flowered. Mr. Kallay, Parmesville, Ohio, introduced in 1932. ('Paul's Scarlet Climber' x 'Grüss an Teplitz') For many years 'Blaze' was the most popular climbing rose, at least in America. Flowers: red, middle-sized, clusters. The original 'Blaze' was reluctant to rebloom. In 1950 Jackson & Perkins discovered a more continuously blooming clone which they originally called 'Blaze Superior' which has usurped the original in catalogues, and dropped (usually) the 'Superior' from its name.

'Paul's Scarlet Climber' ..... In the United States, a form called 'Blaze' was raised by Joseph Kallay of Painesville, Ohio, and introduced by J. & P. in 1932. It was supposed to be remontant, but we in Britain could not see any difference from the original.

Blaze Climber
Kallay 1932 (Paul's Scarlet Climber x Gruss an Teplitz)
Bright scarlet flowers in loose trusses, produced very profusely and often several times in the course of the summer. Resembles Paul's Scarlet Climber, previously much cultivated, but flowers over a longer period.
