Bloom:
Dark purple, crimson shading, violet undertones. Mild, clove, old rose fragrance. 5 petals. Average diameter 2.5". Small to medium, single (4-8 petals), cluster-flowered, flat to cupped bloom form. Moderate, continuous (perpetual) bloom throughout the season. Small, decorative, long, pointed buds.
Habit:
Medium, bushy, upright, well-branched. Medium, matte, medium green foliage.
Height: 3' to 5' (90 to 150cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 4a and warmer. Can be used for specimen. Very hardy. Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant.
Breeder's notes:
The clone of R. foliolosa used in making this cross may be of hybrid origin, as it does not match precisely the descriptions of the species. Crosses made with it always have a percentage of repeat bloomers among the seedlings.
This plant is one of four seedlings kept from this cross. Two are very dwarf, rounded shrubs with 1" pink blooms and tiny foliage. Both repeat somewhat. The third is a cherry red bloomer with superb disease resistance and a sturdy upright growth habit. This seedling (81-02-PFC) bears a striking resemblance to Basye's Purple in many ways, except that it is a smaller, more mannerly plant and it sets seed freely. The seeds have proven quite fertile as well, and I am using this plant in further breeding.
