Robert Fortune, the great explorer of the Royal Horticultural Society, made four trips to China and introduced many fine plants to England. In 1846, he brought twenty-five of the finest tree peonies ever to come out of China. Among these were 'Atrosanguinea,' 'Berenice,' 'Bijou de Chusan,' 'Dr. Bowring,' 'Globosa,' 'Glory of Shanghai,' 'Lord Macartney,' 'Pride of Hongkong,' 'Robert Fortune,' 'Samarang,' and 'Zenobia.' These were enthusiastically received and quickly propagated, so that both British and continental nurseries cataloged them in some quantity in the 1860's.

Fumsu-minisiki rouge noireâtre lamé blanc, Daïkagma vieux rose. HHybride de Lutéa, Souvenir du Professeur Maxime Cornu jaune liseré saumon, Moutan, R. Elisabeth rouge saumon, Bijou de Cluissan blanc légèrement rosé, Comtesse de Tuver rose saumon, Souvenir du Ducher violet unique, Marquise de Clapier rose. Un lot de pivoines herbacées d’Europe : Alba Plena blanc, Anemoniflora Aurea Ligulata rouge, Teinnufoliaflore à petites feuilles et à fleurs rouges doubles.

Stuart Low, salmon shading to red; Osiris, dark maroon-crimson; Reine Elizabeth, deep rose, a magnificent flower and one of the very best kinds; Robert Fortune, rosy-crimson; Samarang, vermillion-red; Souv. de Gand; and Triomphe de Vandermael, bright rose, large and very double.
