Origin:

Bred by Seizo Suzuki (Japan, before 1975).
Introduced in United States by Jackson & Perkins Co. (post 1970) in 1978 as 'Piñata'.

Class:

Climber, Floribunda, Cl., Large-Flowered Climber.

Bloom:

Yellow to vermilion. None to mild fragrance. 25 to 30 petals. Average diameter 2.5". Medium, full (26-40 petals), cluster-flowered, in large clusters, high-centered to flat, open bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

Tall, armed with thorns / prickles, climbing, upright, well-branched. Large, medium green, dense, leathery foliage.

Height: 6' to 8' (185 to 245cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default). Can be used for cut flower, garden or pillar. Vigorous. flowers drop off cleanly. shade tolerant.

Notes:

Gwen Powell grows 'Piñata' in her Los Angeles area garden. She says, to avoid a bad case of thrips, powdery mildew and aphids, cut this one back hard at the end of the growing season. It grows very fast and blooms non stop all season. Likes lots of water.
