Blooms on one cane. Base of that cane is 25 or so feet away, and it comes up over the top of Mermaid, which it is using as a support structure.

April 11, 2024 in San Diego, California. Enormous rose on its own roots. This photo was taken from across the street, looking over a 6 foot fence. The tree in the background is a forty foot tall macadamia nut tree that is approximately 50 years old. The provenance of this particular plant: This is the specimen that Robert Neil Rippetoe gave to Roses Unlimited, when it got too big for him and he decided to discontinue growing it. It has found a home!

Huge plant, in full flush now, once per year. This plant was put in the ground in 2011, in a dark corner behind a playhouse not suitable for any other rose (too dark between playhouse and 6 foot fence). It had gone from a rooted cutting to needing a 15 gallon pot in 9 months, lol. It is competing with Mermaid which has not started to bloom yet this year, and Evergreen Gene is winning! All of the blooms here are Evergreen Gene. San Diego, California, April 9, 2024.

Base of same plant in dark corner between playhouse and fence, happily sending out basals, like there is no tomorrow! San Diego had a lot of rain this year, so it is drunk and happy!
