My 'La Reine' is often more carmine-pink than a lot of the photos on HMF. Lovely scent, good upright habit -- still quite narrow -- and mostly healthy foliage. This is the third flush in her second year here. Not as winter-hardy as the neighboring 'Mrs John Laing', but recovered well. 7 September 2022. Iowa, Zone 5b.

This rose was collected in Santa Barbara, CA, and has been grown under the study name "De la Vina Mystery" ... when collected, it was growing out through the top of an 8-ft. eugenia hedge -- which shows what a rose can do when it is determined to reach the sun. The rose was probably planted before the 1920 earthquake, and the hedge planted later. Probably, the rose had been "removed" but enough remained for it to make a comeback
