Magazine (1848) Page(s) 294. The following roses, Henry IV. Duke of Devonshire, Comte Derby, Nadine Fay, Montaigne, Ariel, Admiral d'Estaing, Lindley, Mathilde Jourdeuil, Olivier de Serres, Titus Livius, Reine de Matin, Gulistan, and a host of others, from that fertile source of new roses, France, which have been sent out at very high prices, are dismissed with the brief remark, that though pretty enough, yet novelty in shape or colour is not to be found amongst them. The descriptions, written by those who raised them, in the usual elastic French manner, were so tempting, and then the price, generally twenty-five francs each (twenty shillings and tenpence), made one suppose that they must be good.
