Rosa rudiuscula Greene 1911. Photographed May 27, 2017 at Rose Woods in the Mayacmas Mtns. near Petrified Forest, California.
Virginia Hopper shared this species with me many years ago. At the time it was unidentified. She got it from a friend in Missouri who called it “Pearl’s Little Missouri Rose.” I loved it from the start, especially the way it's leaves turn red in late summer.

We have a species here in California that also produces red leaves, Rosa sonomensis Greene, but not consistently. In fact it's my contention the red leaf color is responsible for Greene’s species epithet, rudiuscula meaning “ruddy little” rose.

While researching the true identity of Rosa foliolosa Nuttall ex Torrey and A. Gray 1840, I discovered this misidentified “Rosa foliolosa” painting by Alfred Parsons in Ellen Willmott’s Genus Rosa. All the botanical features including ruddy leaf color identify it as Rosa rudiuscula Greene.

In his 2014 revision of Rosa in North America, Dr. Walter H. Lewis made Rosa rudiuscula a subspecies of Rosa carolina but as a synonym! Ignoring the botanical rule of priority he ranked Rosa subserrulata Rydberg 1918 over Rosa rudiuscula Greene 1911. Why? Unfortunately I am sad to report Dr. Lewis died on November 17, 2020 at 90 years old.
