I was poking around on the Loubert website when I discovered this beauty, then looked up in Modern Roses 12 to see what it was classed as. Was surprised to find the color tag as "or", I figured maybe mauve, maybe deep pink, red, but definitely not orange!?

The rose in commerce is probably not the original 'Chénédole', as the darker stripes on the petals are not mentioned in any of the descriptions of this rose. I have a hunch it is actually 'Triomphe d'Amiens'. In any case, orange-red is not correct. I believe the person who classed it many years ago looked at the references which said vermiliion or cochenille-red, which made it "or" for him.

Ah this is interesting, yes it would be nice to correct things like this! Thanks for the info I am studying the Gallicas lately and have designed a huge garden which should take about 5 years to complete!

We are constantly revising our listings according to newest knowledge; you know, however, how difficult it is to make judgements on identification. The issue is that Europe was ravaged during two Worls Wars and a lot of roses and information was lost. When after ca. 1947 interest in OGR restarted, a substantial amount of roses were misidentified by well-meaning rose aficionados.
