Idéal is essentially a Rose for this coast [Riviera]. In spring it even rivals Fortune's Yellow, but it comes in several weeks later and is deeper in its rosy tones. Did it but bloom at all in winter it would be unsurpassable.

L'Ideal This had much more red than normal in the class, and was praised for its qualities as a free standing shrub. I include it, though I have never seen it, and do not know that it still exists. It was later used to breed ramblers, and therefore has some importance. Its coppery pink made quite a stir, until the Pernetianas overhauled it. Raised by Gilbert Nabonnand of Golfe Juan, France; introduced 1887.

Walter Easlea. Reminiscences.
I well remember the excitement caused when we exhibited baskets of 'William Allen Richardson', L'Ideale', 'Ma Capucine', 'Marie van Houtte' etc. Our method of cutting was to take the baskets to various points in the nursery in late afternoon, cut the blooms and put them at once into the bottles, which were embedded in moss. They went by road in a large van, and staged just as they were cut with all their lovely buds, and no wires, and if they were not so grand as our present day exhibits, I maintain they were more natural, mainly because the decorative Roses of today are mutilated by disbudding.
