Tassin Fits in with the above three, but never gave me enough blooms to warrant garden space. Difficult to tell if this or 'Norita' is the darkest colour we have. At least this one can have some life in the colour.

Tassin and Poinsettia both make medium growth but have lost much of their earlier popularity. Both give good exhibition blooms but the former may be dull at times. It can also be a velvety blackish red and beautiful.

'Oklahoma' - fuller than 'Josephine Bruce', less mildew than 'Papa Meilland', darker than 'Mister Lincoln' and a little livelier in colour than 'Tassin' and 'Ellen Mary'.

Charles Mallerin, with its good form, strong perfume, and huge full-blown flowers made up of big thick rich velvety petals must replace Tassin as our best very dark red rose. It is said to be a seedling of Gloria di Roma and Tassin.  Tassin is bigger, carries more petals, opens more slowly and is duller in colour, but it is more reliable as a show rose.  Tassin also has the better plant with ideal abundant follage and wiry stems, while Charles Mallerin shows signs of the soft wooded Pernetiana traits of its other parent, Gloria di Roma.

p78.  Harold Sargeant.  The Alister Clark Memorial Garden Now Complete.
Whether Tassin will hold its place in competition with Charles Mallerin remains to be seen, but claims that Tassin does not blue have not been completely substantiated, and there is more life in the dark velvety crimson of Charles Mallerin than in the dusky petals of Tassin.

Tassin. (4 plants, 1 year). Growth strong and healthy. Form perfect. About the same size as Crimson Glory, darker and more pointed. Despite its darkness the colour is not dull and it does not blue readily. An outstanding double-purpose rose that will quickly gain popularity. The darkest well formed rose we have.
