Wendy Langton: Edna Walling’s roses
She was quite fond of moss roses and believed that because of their ‘rather wild look’ were eminently suited to a country garden setting with plenty of room at their disposal. A particular favourite was Zenobia which being of an unusual amethyst shade teamed well with the flowers of Kalmia latifolia. Although not in any of the current Australian rose lists consulted, I found ‘Zenobia’ in Peter Beales Catalogue of 1997. He dates it from 1892, but the description is most unlike the Walling moss of the same name - ‘Soft, satin pink flowers are fully double and fragrant. Buds well mossed, strong growth and plentiful foliage.’

Zenobia. Old. Moss. Medium pink. This is a vigorous rose bearing large, double, satin pink flowers. They are very fragrant, and resemble those of a hybrid perpetual. It flowers only in summer. It is a medium to tall, somewhat lanky plant and is quite prickly, as one would expect in a moss. Zones 4-9. Paul, UK 1892. Parentage unknown.
