[From Tangible Memories: Californians and their Gardens 1800-1950, by Harry M. Butte & Judith M. Taylor, 2003, p. 40:] Colonel James Lafayette Warren ...came from Massachusetts, the first professional nurseryman in California at the time of the gold rush. ...Warren (1805-1896) arrived in California on the "Sweden" on August 6, 1849. He soon moved from San Francisco to Sacramento....Between 1830 and 1845 Warren ran the "Nonanum Vale Gardens" at Brighton, not far from Boston, Massachusetts. ...Together with his son he established the Warren and Son's Garden and Nurseries at 15 J. St., Sacramento. The Warrens issued their first nursery catalogue in 1853. At least two copies of this catalogue have been saved, one in the Bancroft Libraryof the university of Califoirnia in Berkeley...
