Takes a long time to get established; be prepared to wait a couple of years. Absolutely wicked thorns, worse than any Pavement rugosa. Susceptible to black spot, but handles drought well. Gorgeous colour.
Topaz Jewel is an amazingly drought-tolerant rose. I had her in a pot for a couple of years, where she didn't thrive, and then put her to the ultimate test in super-harsh conditions, fully exposed to sun and wind, no water except for the rain (and there was none in my part of Germany two record-breaking summers in a row after she got planted), and adding insult to injury she is being overgrown by grass, because I'm not the nice gardener I should be and I don't remove the grass. But she still hangs on! The only other two roses to survive this ordeal (poor beauties) are Alexander MacKenzie and Rotes Phänomen.
