Same bud, still rather pink, proving to be a somewhat slow opener. 15/9/25.

First bud on my cutting-grown plant of "David's Dilemma", a darker pink than many of the photos here. I'm impressed with the attractive pink-plum stems which contrast nicely with the bright green semi-glossy foliage. Sydney, 12/9/25. Provenance: Margaret Furness. Looking forward to the fragrance.

Same bud, opening up. 16/9/25. I'm reserving my proper assessment of the fragrance for now as I have some hayfever, but my first impression is that it's fruity and reminded me of the scent of 'Mrs B R Cant'.

South Australia, zone 9b, mid-late summer. The flower is almost uniformly red today.

If this really is 'Socrate', could this be the "somewhat jagged petals" mentioned in the 12th March 1887 'The Garden' reference? 15/9/25.

"David's Dilemma" bloom stems often have three bracts - either two single lobed bracts and a small leaf with three leaflets, or one single-lobed bract and two three-leaflet leaves. Other variations are also seen - eg bracts with one or two formed leaflets as seen here in the lower example. Perth, Western Australia, winter.
