'Karl Herbst' Medium Red Remontant P1 H1
A vigorous red rose, bred from 'Independence' x 'Peace' by Wilhelm Kordes, and introduced in 1950. I remember my reply on being asked whether we should grow it, that a dull red rose with no scent was not likely to be sold. And it certainly proved difficult. It was somewhat ugly except when its flush coincided with hot weather, in which case the blooms were one and all large and shapely. But it never was the rose the ordinary gardener wanted.
For breeders, it was an important variety, for it proved an effective pollen parent. It was said that one could not go wrong by putting its pollen on a yellow variety. All I can say is it never worked for me, but I admit I was late in the field. 'Karl Herbst' was vigorous and healthy, and future rosarians may perhaps point to him as a significant breeding rose.
