Origin:
Bred by Lartay, fils (France, 1850).
Introduced in Australia by John J. Rule, Victoria Nursery in 1860 as 'Le Lion des Combats'.
Introduced in Australia by Exotic Nursery (Australia) in 1866 as 'Le Lion des Combats'.
Class:
Hybrid China, Hybrid Perpetual.  
Bloom:
Crimson, dark purple blending, red highlights, violet reverse.  Moderate fragrance.  Average diameter 3.5".  Large, double (17-25 petals), borne mostly solitary, in small clusters, expanded , scalloped bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  Leafy sepals buds.  
Habit:
Light prickles.  Glossy, dark green foliage.  5 to 7 leaflets.  
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).  Can be used for exhibition or pillar.  Hardy.
