was divine for about 4 weeks each spring in the coveted eastern bed. the rest of the year was not so divine, with arching octopus arms and blackspotted foliage in the semi-shady spot. took up too much premium real estate, so was relegated to a back alley position. has suffered ever since, with not a bloom. i sometimes regret this decision and perhaps another move to the Old European bed is in order. 21012, death by drought

Arthur Bell has better form and color when it's cold. The flower lasts long and the scent is fruity damask, very strong. Its leaves are 100% healthy, dark green, and glossy in alkaline soil. The stem is long and lasts long in a vase.

Arhur Bell's BUDS were yellow with red stripes in cold weather, then opened to deep yellow, and then lightened. I put lots of alfalfa meal in the soil, which made the bloom's color deepened, and didn't fade much.

Barcelona as own-root is tiny, even in its 2nd year, 1' x 1' like a mini-rose. The scent is very good, better than most red roses. Foliage is clean in my alkaline clay. As own-root it survived many zone 5a winters.

Here's a 2-year-old Ascot in my zone 5 Nebraska yard already 4-5 feet tall and thick with blooms, June 2013

Barcelona is drought tolerant as 3rd-year-own-root. It doubled in height & more blooms after I moved it from wet clay, to loamy & dry raised bed. Picture taken 8/28/17, 1 month after being moved. The scent is fantastic, very strong.
