I like to grow teas, chinas and Earthkind roses. I have a noisette - Mme Alfred Carriere that does well in the shade. And I love the Bourbon Madame Isaac Periere growing under a fig tree. I have Mrs. John Lang (Hyb. Perpetual) which seems to have perpetual rust. The most vigorous roses I grow are Mrs. B.R. Cant and William R. Smith. I end up pruning and fill several trash cans of these roses every year. If I don't they might engulf my garden! I am experimenting with a potted rose garden in the shade under the outer leaves of an oak tree that gets 3-4 hrs of sun a day. The roses that seem to do well here are floribundas: Confetti, Spartan, Black Cherry, Black Ice, Burgundy Iceberg, Honey Bouquet, the grandiflora Cherry Parfait and Love and the tea rose Safrano (very large pot). I also have Bee's Knees in a pot and it is very healthy. All my tea and china roses are very tough and drought tolerant.
