According to Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix in The Ultimate Guide To Roses at p. 22, the species was named for Olga Fedtschenko. Alexei was born on Lake Baikal and conducted a three-year expedition with his wife. After Alexei was killed in a climbing accident, Olga trained their son Boris as a botanist. Olga and Boris then conducted further botanical expeditions in central Asia.
