Penzance (Lord). James Plaisted Wilde, 1st Baron Penzance Eashing Park, England [From Roses of America, by Stephen Scanniello and Tania Bayard, p. 41-44:] In the 1890s, Lord Penzance, an English judge, raised a number of eglantine hybrids. Known as Penzance hybrids, most of these are the result of crossing the eglantine with hybrid perpetuals, Bourbons, or other species roses. Many of the Penzance hybrids bear the names of characters in the novels of Sir Walter Scott.
[From Botanica's Roses, p. 325:] Penzance was one of the first hybridizers to employ controlled pollination in his work.
