Born 1877. Started breeding roses at the age of 13. During WWI, mobilized, he writes to his wife telling what to hybridize . First Catalog 1936. Joseph Sauvageot recounts in "les Amis des Roses", January 1927, p. 11-12 that since 1922 he has been experimenting wih crosses of botanical roses (Hugonis, Mpyesii, Sericea, Macrophylla, Ferruginea, Rubrifolia) with Hybrid Teas ans Polyanthas since 1922. [From A Rose Odyssey, by J.H. Nicolas, p. 27ff:] A twenty-five mile ride from Dijon brings us to a small village, Vaire, in the Jura Mountains, where there is an old château of Mansard with gardens of Le Notre. Up to 1932 the superintendent of the château was Joseph Sauvageot, but he is now a professional rose grower. The winters in the Jura section are very severe. Sauvageot has done a great deal of hybridizing toward hardy roses, hybrids of R. hugonis, R. moyesi, etc. While his work is still in the experimental stage, I believe we can expect valuable additions to our gardens from that source. He has also produced some Hybrid Teas, but these are only to keep the pot boiling while he develops his hardy strain.
