[From "Transactions of the American Institute", 1857, p. 125:] October 1856...Roses and dahlias...William A. Burgess, Glen Cove, L. I., for the best American seedlings. Silver medal.

[From "Scientific American", June 17, 1865, p. 386:] Mr. William A. Burgess, of Glen Cove, presented a bushel-basket full of different varieties of seedling roses, which were produced by himself from the seed. He remarked that the idea had prevailed that seedling roses could be produced only in France, but the truth was, that they could be propagated from the seed here better than in France. He advised everybody to plant their rose seed. He had obtained blossoms in nine weeks from the time the seed sprouted.

[From "The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany and All Useful Discoveries", July 1865, p. 208:] The Committee of the Club report" specimens of a new [strawberry] seedling (Gen. Grant) raised by Wm. A. Burgess, Glen Cove, were exhibited, that had been picked 76 hours, rode 30 miles in a wagon, and when shown were firm and in good order.

[From "The American Garden", July 1882, p. 107:] The first premium for the best display of cut Roses was awarded to W. A. Burgess, of Glen Cove, L. I., whose large and beautiful collection attracted general attention. ...Mr. Burgess also received a premium for the best six Maréchal Niel Roses, also first for the best six Moss Roses, viz.: Luxemburg, Salet, common Moss, White Cluster, Isaac Angélique, and Marie de Paris.
