Cowan, Vol. 5, 1985, p. 678:] Smith, James Edward (1759- 1828), British botanist; studied medicine in Edinburgh and Leiden; purchased the Linnaean herbarium in 1784; Dr. med. Leiden 1786; founded the Linnean Society 1788 (president 1788- 1828), knighted 1814. (Sm.).
