Pune - a city with a historical background dating back to the 16th century, located 600 m above the sea level, is renowned for its salubrious climate. It is India's prime centre for education and cultural activities.
The Rose Society of Pune ('The Society') was founded in 1962 under the able guidance of Late Mr. Jayantrao Tilak, who was also its first president. The main object of the Society is to popularize roses and to inculcate love and interest for roses amongst the masses.
At the time of its inception, the main problem was of the supply of good quality roses. This was deftly handled by Late Mr. N.A. Joshi, a founder member, who, with his enterprise invented the polybag method of rose propogation. For this effort, he was felicitated by the Maratha Chamber of Commerce. The procedure curtailed the cumbersome budding activity and in turn started the modern rose revolution in this part of India. The Society has under its aegis a lot of talented individuals who have successfully started their own nurseries.
To promulgate roses, the Society also undertakes hybridisation activity, publishing of books in the vernacular language, organising rose shows, etc. The Society also conducts regular meetings, lectures by experts, slide shows, visits to nurseries, etc. to enhance the rose culture.
The Rose Society of Pune is the first City Rose society of India and prides itself as the mother Rose Society. The present network of Rose Societies in Western India is a result of direct or indirect inspiration received from it.
The Rose Socities of Mumbai, Phaltan, Ratnagiri, sangli, Kolhapur, Ichalkaranji, Chiplun, and others owe a lot of their foundation to the Society efforts and cooperation by the rosarians from the Rose Society of Pune.
The Society is justly proud for the production millions of roses in nurseries in and around the city.
It has successfully hosted two annual conventions of India Rose Federation in 1983 and 1990, the latter being a SAARC event.
The Society has ambitious plans on the anvil to start an exclusive Rose garden cum trial ground for cultivating roses.
