A Hermit's Garden is located in Anderson, California, USDA Zone 9. On his web site, Robin Bowen has some great shots of his extensive garden and some of his roses (about 90 and counting). Among the companion plants he's had a lot of luck with are gladiolus -- almost a thousand of them. There are over a dozen separate raised rose beds. Robin has added some new roses to his garden. As the garden evolves, he'll keep us posted.
