Towering Doug firs in the backyard, facing NW/N, pretty shady. S/SE in the sunny front yard. No grass. Removed huge juniper bushes and a boatload of vinca to make room for plants. Inherited some rose when I moved here, including several Oregold and several which remain a mystery.
