I have a newish garden a couple miles from the Huntington. I still haven't seen their rose garden but often visit the childrens garden (rarely get elsewhere). I came to gardening from my interest and academic studies in ethnobotany. Had the great fortune to work at the Fullerton Arboretum watering and tending plants on the grounds and in the nursery where I got to rub elbows with some really wise plant people. I had a real aversion to plants that weren't edible until I met my current beloved whose mother has a true gift for arranging flowers. I started growing dahlias and became a little obsessed. Then I stumbled into Floret Farms and her book "The Cut Flower Garden".
I look forward to reading a book found recently about the history of the LA Flower Market that apparently was initially supplied by the cut flowers of gardeners all over Los Angeles. I love to find pin frogs and other floral paraphernalia from the Beagle Company (Vogue was a brand) from the 40s and 50s originally made in Pasadena.
I'm officially off the deep end for flowers and roses are a natural next step (perennials! So much easier than the hassle with planting annuals - at least I HOPE!)
Now I've filled in all easily available space with flowers. I dream of flower farming my entire neighborhood and have now started planting more roses in my neighbors back yard :)
