- I do not winter protect any of my roses. The grafts are planted at least six inches below the soil level. I'm hoping that soon more roses are going to be available on their own roots.
- All of my flowerbeds are raised beds (about 6 to 8 inches) because my soil is red clay. Not only is it impossible to weed, a bathtub effect is created that will rot the plants.
- My yard is definitely not level, so I have also been experimenting with terraced beds on some slopes, if it works out well, I will be putting in permanent retaining walls.
- I amend the existing soil with peat moss, and old manure or compost, at a ratio of: 1 - 1 - 1. When available, I also incorporate wood shavings, and shredded paper into the soil. I learned the hard way NOT to add sand to clay soil - it becomes impossible.
- The beauty of clay soil is that it retains moisture when other soils dry out too quickly.
- Roses really do Love Garlic!! - Garlic planted beside or behind roses definitely makes a difference. I've also been experimenting with Geraniums - 2009 - I planted geraniums in a semi-circle in front of the roses in one row and was amazed at the results - the japanese beetles barely touched the roses in that particular row, yet did their normal thing on the roses in a row that was only 8 feet away. The White Geraniums seemed to be the most effective.
Roses have become my biggest love, but I grow a large variety of other perennials also.
My main passion is gardening, but we have long winters and that is when I do woodworking and other hobbies.
Below is a list of the majority of my roses. There are still some that have to be reclaimed from the weeds and they will be added if they survived.
