We live in the Central Fraser Valley Langley B.C. about 25 miles inland from Vancouver which is usually 10 days to 2 weeks ahead of us with the warmer weather. The climate is mild and tempered by the Pacific Ocean making it good for growing roses, but we do get cold out flow winds from the Cascade Mountains and spring can be a long time coming. We live on a flood plain not far from the original Hudson's Bay farm and some of the best agricultural land in Canada. It has a high clay content to the soil that keeps the ground moist in the hot summers and with regular additions of manure,course sand and organics its perfect soil.The front yard is mostly in the shade except during the early part of the morning and in the afternoon. This is where I plant some spieces roses, R. nutkana,R. woodsii, and R. multiflora, along the east fence spreading into my nieghbour's untended yard gaining more growing space on our side of the property line. The backyard is south facing and receives the full sun during the day. When its not clouded over and raining here as anybody that lives on the wet coast knows can go on and on. Most of the spring and summer there is little need for watering every day. We have an interest in Gallica roses but grow species roses, David Austin, Found roses and are trying to put together a collection of H.M. Eddie's roses.
