Bred by Jean-Pierre Vibert (France, 1839).

Centifolia, Hybrid Gallica.  

Crimson, purple mottling, pink undertones.  Strong fragrance.  Medium to large, semi-double to double, cupped bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  

Medium, armed with thorns / prickles, bushy, dense, upright.  Dark green foliage.  

Height: 39" to 5' (100 to 150cm).  Width: 4' to 5' (120 to 150cm).

USDA zone 4b through 8b.  Can be used for garden.  Vigorous.  shade tolerant.  Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant.

In September 1998, the Montreal Botanical Garden (Le Jardin Botanique de Montreal) carried out a survey of its roses' resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust. This is one of the outstanding varieties which showed a 0% to 5% infection rate. The data was taken on well-established roses.
The 1936/1937 catalog of Ketten Freres lists Alain Blanchard as a Centifolia.
