Notes:
In the early 20th Century, U.S. peony growers trying to import peonies from Kelway's were frequently sent mis-identified plants. When one peony grower imported 'Baroness Schroeder', this pink-flowered peony was the plant sent by Kelway's. There's no way to know if it was a Kelway origination.
The customer realized it wasn't the Baroness, so called it "Pink Baroness Schroeder", and since it was a good peony, there was some effort made to decide what it should be called. [see references] This peony was also called 'La Verne', and apparently was occasionally sold as 'Eugénie Verdier'. It's unclear where the name 'La Verne' came from, but it seems that this plant is still in commerce as 'Pink Baroness Schroeder'.
